Problem & Solution
Transfer Chute Blockage & Liner Wear - Causes, Solutions & Prevention
Transfer chute blockage and liner wear are twin failures across cement, mining, and power plants. When a chute plugs, the conveyor line behind it stops; when the liner wears through, material cuts into the chute itself. Sticky or poorly directed material builds up until flow halts, while abrasive streams wear liners fast. UGES flow-engineered chutes with AR400 and ceramic liners keep material moving.

Understanding Transfer Chute Blockage and Liner Wear
Problem Description
Cost of Inaction

Root Causes
High Wall Friction and Material Buildup
When friction between the bulk solid and the chute walls and liners becomes too great, flow slows and material accumulates, gradually reducing the effective cross-section until the chute plugs. Buildup is fastest with wet, fine, or cohesive materials that adhere to the walls.
Poor Chute Geometry and Material Trajectory
Incorrect chute angles, dimensions, and impact points let material flow unevenly, lose velocity, and pile up where the stream changes direction. Without a profile matched to the material trajectory, the chute creates its own dead zones where blockage starts.
Abrasive Liner Wear
The falling and sliding material stream constantly abrades the chute interior, and in abrasive service this wear can be rapid and even catastrophic, cutting through standard plate. As liners thin and develop steps and gouges, they also disturb flow and accelerate both wear and blockage.

Engineering Solutions
DEM Flow-Engineered Chute Profiles
UGES designs transfer chutes using discrete element modelling to control material trajectory, maintain velocity, and centre the stream, so the chute neither chokes nor spreads. Engineered hood-and-spoon and curved profiles keep cohesive material moving and remove the dead zones where blockage begins.
AR400 and Ceramic Wear Liners
UGES lines chutes with AR400 abrasion-resistant steel or ceramic tiles matched to the abrasiveness of the material, protecting the structure and holding a smooth flow surface far longer than plain plate. Replaceable liner panels make renewal quick and protect the chute body from being cut through.
Low-Friction Liners and Flow Aids
For sticky and cohesive materials, UGES fits low-friction liner surfaces and, where needed, flow aids that reduce wall adhesion and keep material releasing cleanly from the chute walls. This addresses the high wall friction and buildup that cause plugging in wet and fine service.
