Problem & Solution
Screw Conveyor Choking & Wear - Root Causes, Prevention & Solutions
Screw conveyor choking and wear is a common reason feed lines in cement, chemical, and food plants lose capacity and stop unexpectedly. Loaded above 45% of the trough, run too fast, or fed damp material, the screw packs and stalls, while abrasive product wears the flights and seizes the hanger bearings. UGES engineered screws, hard-faced flights, and sealed hanger bearings keep material moving.

Understanding Screw Conveyor Choking and Premature Wear
Problem Description
Cost of Inaction

Root Causes
Overloading, Over-Speed and Damp Material Bridging
Feeding the trough above about 45 percent loading, running the screw faster than the material can advance, or conveying damp, cohesive product causes the material to pack against the trough and bridge rather than move forward. Moisture also collects and thickens on hanger bearings, choking the path through which incoming material must pass.
Flight and Trough Abrasion Wear
Because a screw slides material against the flights and trough, abrasive products steadily wear the flight outside diameter and the trough liner. As the flights thin, conveying efficiency drops and power draw rises, and in severe cases the worn flights lead to screw failure.
Hanger Bearing Fatigue and Misalignment
On longer screws that require intermediate hanger bearings, a major cause of failure is fatigue from misalignment, made worse by worn bearings or coupling shafts. Fibrous and damp materials are especially hard on hanger bearings, and a failed hanger bearing quickly leads to coupling and screw damage.

Engineering Solutions
Application-Engineered Screw Sizing and Speed
UGES sizes the screw diameter, pitch, trough loading, and speed to the actual material and throughput, keeping the conveyor below its choke limit even with cohesive or variable feed. Tapered or variable-pitch inlet sections and correct trough loading prevent the packing and bridging that stall standard screws.
Hard-Faced Flights and Lined Troughs
UGES screws carry hard-faced or hardened flight edges and abrasion-resistant trough liners that hold their profile far longer in abrasive service, keeping conveying efficiency high and power draw stable. This extends service life and prevents the thinning that leads to screw failure.
Sealed, Self-Aligning Hanger Bearings
UGES uses sealed, application-matched hanger bearings with self-aligning mounting and effective shaft seals that keep contaminant and moisture out and tolerate the small misalignments that cause fatigue. Correct hanger bearing selection and sealing removes the single most common breakdown point on long screws.
